Fighter-jet-inspired motorcycle doesn't skimp — not even on the minigun

Icon-A-10-Warthog-Motorcycle.jpg

The motorcycle nuts at ICON Motorsports make an interesting observation about their Warthog bike, inspired by the USAF's A-10 ground-attack fighter that shares the same nickname: "Obviously the first thing that grabs one's attention is the 800-watt MTX audio system." Well, sure, that's impressive — but I think the minigun mounted to the front of the 'cycle caught my eye first. That, and it's hard to miss that the whole thing is decal'd to the nines with ammunition. But I'm sure that audio system sounds killer, too.

The Warthog does everything it can to look mean and fast, and has a few added, nutty frills, such as an 8-inch LCD screen "to view Full Metal Jacket, Iron Eagle, or Top Gun and the ability to broadcast a view of the victims left in its wake via an integrated rear view camera."

Worried you won't be able to rock a bike like the Warthog? Well, a matching helmet should give you the confidence you need. Check out the gallery below for more of the Icon Warthog, and click through for a video of the bike in action.

Rea and Neukirchner Work Hard at Valencia Test

ReaValenciaTest.jpg

In the final World Superbike track action of 2009, Hannspree Ten Kate Honda’s Jonathan Rea set the fourth fastest unofficial time in a two-day test, which concluded this afternoon at Valencia in Spain.

Despite a small crash yesterday, the 22-year-old, who finished his debut WSBK season in championship fifth place, completed 190 laps of the 4.005km Ricardo Tormo circuit with a best time of 1’34.2s as he tested a combination of new swingarm, front forks and electronics on his 2009 Honda CBR1000RR Fireblade.

The Valencia test marked Rea’s first track outing since his coronation in the ‘Kings of Wanneroo’ meeting in Perth, Australia last month where the Northern Irishman won all three races on a stock Honda CBR1000RR.

Also testing in Valencia was Max Neukirchner, Rea’s new Hannspree Ten Kate Honda team-mate for the 2010 season, continuing his familiarisation with the team and the Honda CBR1000RR – a process which started in October at Portimao in Portugal.

The German ace spent most of 2009 on the sidelines through injury but Neukirchner has been training hard and his current fitness levels are high enough for the 26-year-old to have completed 160 laps during his two days at Valencia, setting a best time of 1’34.7s.

Jonathan Rea – best time 1’34.2s
We’ve had a really constructive couple of days here and got through a lot of work. We evaluated three sets of forks with different internal specifications, a slightly modified swing arm and some different electronics, so there was a big list of things to assess. What we didn’t get much of a chance to do was combine all the good things we found into one package and we were still working through things when Pirelli asked us to test the two new tyres they had. One of them felt pretty good, but we didn’t really have the right set up to get the best out of it. Overall, I’m really happy though, because it was a big workload we had to get through.

Max Neukirchner – best time 1’34.7s
I’m really happy with this test, because it was really important for me to get more time on the bike and look for a good base setting. We only made some suspension adjustments and didn’t really test any new parts. I built up my pace slowly and only this afternoon did I really start to push a little harder when I had a good feeling and began to feel confident enough to open the throttle. This was only my fourth day with the team and I have not ridden very much since the crash at Monza in May. Of course, I still need some more time on the bike but I can go into the winter holidays with a good feeling now and continue my training, which has been quite intense recently. I did 160 laps here at Valencia and had no fitness problems; I might be a little sore tomorrow, but I’m feeling very good!

Ronald ten Kate
– team manager
All the stuff that we needed to test here has been tested, and it was a lot of work to get through. The improvement from our race here in April is like the difference between night and day so it’s definitely been a good step forward for Jonathan, who has put in a lot of laps and worked really hard. We’re also beginning to find to clear direction forward with Max. We tested a lot of different settings so we will be able to narrow the window a lot more for him at our next test in Portimao in January. For now, we head back to our families in a very positive frame of mind and take this opportunity to wish everyone a merry Christmas and a very happy and successful New Year.

AMA Road Racing: What Will it Become?

2009 Daytona Bike Week.
What will AMA Pro Road Racing be in 2010 and beyond?
Be it good or be it bad, timing is everything … And with the unfortunate slump in our economic world and DMG’s rough intro into our beloved sport, timing for AMA road racing couldn’t be worse. Thus, the big question remains: Who will be left for 2010? Big-man on campus Mat Mladin has already announced his retirement and rumor going around is that short of Yamaha, none of the big-four Japanese manufacturers have the desire (or money) to field a factory team next year. Though only a rumor, with motorcycle sales down as much as they are, this comes as no surprise. But whose fault is this really and how much does DMG's lackluster-at-best takeover of the new series have to do with the state of the road racing union? What will become of AMA Pro Road Racing?

Rumor is Corona’s sponsorship deal is up at the end of the year and that Honda has no desire to go racing on its own. Though talking to a few of the Honda crew guys, they say “racing in some form looks good for next year,” so hopefully they know something we don’t. With rider Neil Hodgson still recovering from a motocross injury and not yet performing at 100-percent, the Corona team haven’t had the results they expected this year. It’s easy to tell everyone in their squad is disappointed considering their jobs are probably on the line.

Corona Extra Honda Racings Neil Hodgson finished second in American Superbike at Daytona.
Will Corona and Honda be around next season? Let's hope so...
Attack Monster Kawasaki is another team who's future is up in the air from what we hear - at least the Kawasaki part of the equation. Attack’s business is selling racing goods so there’s little question they will be in the paddock next year, but with what riders and on what brand of bike remains to be seen. It's said they only have a 1-year deal with Kawasaki and the word is Team Green has no desire to go road racing next year due to the economy. Not to mention, Attack Kawasaki's results, despite proven-winners Jamie Hacking and Roger Lee Hayden on their bikes, have been mediocre at best. It would be a shame to see Kawasaki not have some sort of factory or factory-supported team in the paddock, so let’s hope these rumors are nothing more than just that – rumors.

On the other hand, thankfully, there may be some hope at the end of the tunnel.

Ducati's sales have been hurt less than the Japanese as of late and with Larry Pegram winning some races for the Italian team, next year we don’t foresee any change in their current situation. The only muttering we’ve heard is the team could bump up to two riders in 2010, which would be a good thing. The more Ducatis on the gird the better, if you ask us.

Mladin leads teammate Hayden at Fontanas first American Superbike race.
Mladin is out at Yoshimura, recently announcing he will be retiring after this season. Question is: Who will take his spot?
Yoshimura has openly stated that no matter what happens, they will be fielding a team next year. It’s also known that rising star Blake Young has a two-year deal with the squad that bleeds over into 2010. They sell racing parts and now build customer race bikes, so being top-dog at the track is critical to business. But the question is, will they be on Suzuki? Wouldn’t it be wild to see them on a different brand? Yoshimura Honda maybe? Considering Suzuki's current struggles, you can't rule it out - I'm sure they're not.

The bigger news comes in the form of new players from Europe, BMW and Aprilia, as both have made it clear they want to go Superbike racing for the first time in America with their all-new 2010 liter-bikes. The Roundel knows that to sell its new S1000RR they need to go racing on this side of the pond. It has been floating around the media that they have gone after several established teams (Erion Racing, Attack, Jordan Suzuki and M4 Suzuki) with proposals to run a BMW squad for next year. According to inside sources from one of these teams this may be nothing more than a rumor at this point. Either way, though, BMW did express to us recently at a press event that they have a very large interest in AMA Superbike racing next year so there's no question they are looking to come play.
Chaz Davies - Daytona SportBike Road America
Can KWS field the new Aprilia RSV4 in Superbike next year and if they do, who will ride it?

The same can be said for Aprilia, as they know how important selling its new RSV4 in America will be next year. Most have them linked to the current KWS team, who runs Aprilia's RSV1000R in the Daytona SportBike class, as the relationship is already in place. But considering how little of a budget they are giving KWS this season, moving up to the Superbike class is going to take more than some free bikes and parts to be competitive. More cash and some trick WSBK parts are a must. Let’s hope the Italian company puts some money and serious support into the effort because it would be great to see that awesome-looking new bike running up front.

Michael Jordan Motorsports will be back once again as MJ himself is passionate about the sport ... and thank goodness for that. They've had a relationship with Suzuki for years now and MJ has been known to be a loyal guy, but here’s no doubt getting the support needed to run a team for ’10 could be an uphill battle. And in typical Suzuki style, there’s no doubt they will leave all decisions until that last minute. Either way, it’s good to know MJ and crew will still be around next year as this team runs one of the most professional presentations in the paddock. Having Jordan’s name on the side of the bike surely helps our struggling sport. They have also done well to get National Guard involved as the title sponsor of Geoff May's Number 54 machine, as well as bringing them in to sponsor the American Superbike class itself.
AMA Moto-GT Daytona
DMG and their quirky rules including the use of the pace car, have done nothing but hurt the AMA Pro Road Racing Series from the rider and team perspective.

Let’s keep our fingers crossed that everything finds a way of working out and we see all four Japanese manufacturers on the grid in some form next year. We would all welcome the addition of newcomers from BMW and Aprilia too. I know it’s tough to keep the hope alive, but hang in there with me and hopefully road racing won’t follow the footsteps of AMA dirt track and become a B-level sport. There’s little-to-no question DMG’s inadequate job of taking over American road racing couldn’t have come at a worse time. It’s hard enough for the teams to find sponsorship in this economy but with the boys from Daytona running the series like cowboys it's going to be nothing but an uphill battle.

JJ2S X4 500 – 4 Cylinder 2 Stroke Concept Motorcycle

JJ2S X4 500cc 2 Stroke motorcycle

Motorcycle design often revolves around the engine. The size, shape, number of cylinders and configuration play a large part in much of what follows. What if you had an X4? 4 cylinders in an X configuration open up new design possibilities and that is exactly what we have here, not only that, it appears to be a 500cc 2 stroke! This is the JJ2S X4 500 by JJS Design. They have developed and patented a new engine and designed a motorcycle around it.

JJS Design is a Polish company and unfortunately my translating abilities here are not so good, so I can’t fill you in on many details but the design looks extremely impressive, both the motorcycle design itself and, of course, the X4 2 stroke engine.

I will try to get a translation of some of the information, any of our Polish readers care to lend a hand?

Thanks for the tip, Brian!

MotoCzysz E1pc electric superbike features iPhone dashboard

motoczysz_iphone
We have earlier seen some of the finest pimped motorcycles loaded with gadgetry to whet the gadget needs of high-end riders, including the Kawasaki ZX10R that’s loaded with a full-fledged music system, the computerized chopper fitted with a SwitchBack PC on board to maneuver safely on the road. But, the MotoCzysz E1pc electric superbike is a showstopper. The electric motorcycle boasts an iPhone dashboard, which means it can track location and speed via GPS and can even measure performance metrics like lateral G, top speed and acceleration through various apps. The E1pc can accelerate to 120mph in just seven or eight seconds, according to Michael Czysz, the company’s founder, which means it’s as fast as the 2009 Suzuki GSX-R1000. Another reason that makes this all digital bike the Tesla of electric motorcycles is its 10 battery packs and three motors.

motoczysz_e1pc
The E1pc zero-emission, all-electric motorcycle will be ridden by Mark Miller in the zero emissions TTXGP race at the Isle of Man. This hi-tech bike is expected to win over the zero-emission Mission One as the fastest electric motorcycle. No word on whether the company plans to introduce a street version anytime in future, but this beast surely will have onlookers swooning for more than one reason – though we admire the futuristic Honda CB 750 motorcycle more, but zero-emissions tops everything else – right?

World D16RR gathering

Donington serenaded in the sunshine by the sound of the World’s largest gathering of Desmosedicis.
Over 150 guests witnessed the World’s largest ever gathering of Desmosedici owners at Donington Park as 45 Desmosedicis from all over Europe took to the track.

This exclusive Desmosedici-only track day saw owners from UK, Germany, Switzerland, Holland and France congregate at the Derbyshire track for an historic day boosted by perfect weather.

A number of special guests were present adding to the wonderful day. Alan Jenkins, Desmosedici designer, gave a seminar giving an insight into the production and development of this unique machine. Ernesto Marinelli, the Superbike technical director, gave a presentation on the Ducati Corse organisation and Donington Circuit owner, Simon Gillett, presented the development plans for the Donington circuit.

Off course the main focus of the day was the incredible bike itself and the Desmosedici owners enjoyed nearly two and a half hours of track time on the full GP circuit with optional one to one training from DRE instructors that included ex racers David James, Marco Luchinelli and Dario Marchetti.

For those guests who weren’t riding there was also a chance to have a thrill of a lifetime aboard a specially adapted two-seater Desmosedici. Riders and guests also marvelled at the skills of factory test rider, Vittoriano Guareschi, as he took to the circuit for some demonstration laps aboard a borrowed Desmosedici!

This fantastic day was topped off by the generosity of those present who raised £5,500 for Riders for Health. Ducati UK would like to thank all the owners, guests and participants for making this a hugely successful and historic day and would also like to thank them on behalf of Riders for Health.

Mission One Electric Superbike Revealed

Be it bike tests, feature stories or racing reports Madson is just glad to be one of the 3% who found a career using their English degree. He rides whatever’s in the MCUSA garage - just don’t ask him to wheelie.

Mission One
The Mission One claims a top speed of 150mph and range of 150 miles, amazing performance numbers for an electric motorcycle design.
For Mission Motors it’s all about the number 150. The Bay Area motorcycle start up has gained instant notoriety in the two-wheeled world with its unveiling of the Mission One electric superbike, making incredible performance claims of 150mph top speed and 150-mile range.

The creator of Mission One is Forrest North, who founded Mission Motor Company after leaving the Tesla Roadster electric car project. Formerly known as Hum Cycles, Mission Motor has rebranded with the debut of its new design, taking its name from its office location on San Francisco’s Mission Street.

Battery technology has been the hindrance of performance and range in previous electric rides, but it would seem that Mission has found a solution with its high-energy Lithium-Ion units. The secret to the impressive power claims may come from sheer battery quantity, as photos from the Mission Motor website (www.ridemission.com) show the exterior bodywork houses a tubular frame chassis that is practically bulging with battery packs.

The battery power juices a liquid-cooled, three-phase AC induction motor, which Mission PR describes as “about the size of a soccer ball.” A chain drive is visible, which will transfer the immediate 100 lb-ft of torque produced by the electric mill. The electric drivetrain requires no gearbox, clutch or exhaust.

But before the lofty 150 gets branded into consumer brains, it is worth noting those claims are listed on the spec sheet under “target performance.“ Making us wonder what the current real-world performance numbers are for the Mission One (we are eagerly awaiting official word from Mission representatives).

Mission One
The Mission One was designed by fuseproject's Yves Behar.
Still, the claims shatter conventional performance and range limitations in other electric motorcycle designs – displaying the incredible potential of the electric drivetrain in a motorcycle application.

Befitting the Mission One’s high-tech credentials is wireless data acquisition, enabling riders to download and tune their ride via wireless laptop connection. There will be some wires required, however, as the Mission One will need to be recharged – taking “under 2 Hours @ 240V (8 Hours @ 120V).” The cost to “fill-up” the new ride from full empty will be a scant $1.96 – a claim made by Mission based off California energy prices.

Of course, the big to-do about electric vehicles are their pollution and CO2-reducing ZEV (Zero Emission Vehicle) benefits. Even sourcing fossil-fuel powerplants (mostly coal in the US), the efficiency of an electric motor is far greater than internal combustion – thus reducing C02 emissions.

Like many battery-powered vehicles, the Mission One enhances its already high efficiency by taking advantage of regenerative braking, capturing otherwise wasted kinetic energy on deceleration. There is an extra wrinkle in the Mission design, however, as the regenerative braking is tunable by the rider.

Mission One
Will the Mission One live up to its 150 claims? Potential owners can drop $5K and reserve a limited-edition version to find out.
The remaining specs live up the Mission One’s high-performance claims. Fully adjustable Ohlins suspension, front and rear. Brembo brakes, with dual 310mm discs and radial-mount four-piston calipers up front. Forged aluminum Marchesini wheels. The interesting styling of the Mission One, designed by Yves Behar of fuseproject, certainly make it look like something capable of 150mph.

Mission is currently taking reservations for the “Premier Limited Edition of the Mission One” on their website. A $5000 fee will get you on the list for a 2010 Mission One. No final price is yet listed.

Stay tuned for further developments of the Mission One and other electric designs here at Motorcycle USA.
