Yamaha Star V Star 250 Review

Unintimidating may not be the sexiest descriptor ever applied to a motorcycle, yet unintimidating is right up the alley for those just starting out on two wheels. An entry-level motorcycle needs to be easy-to-ride, functional and fun. The Yamaha’s V Star 250 pulls off all these feats quite well.

The 250 street bike market isn’t exactly robust these days in the bigger-is-better USofA. Riders not interested in a scooter or dual-sport have few options from the major OEMs. Kawasaki corners the sporty side with its class-dominating Ninja 250R, while Honda offers its Parallel Twin-powered Rebel (the Nighthawk no longer in the rotation). Suzuki delivers two options in its new single-cylinder TU250X (Read our 2009 Suzuki TU250X Review) and the Parallel Twin GZ250.

The V Star 250 is notable as the lone V-Twin 250 from the major players. (Note: Hyosung’s GV250, which we were unable to secure for a comparison, also sports a V-Twin.)

span class="fullpost" >2010 Star V Star 250 Review It packs a little punch with its 249cc engine, but the V Star 250's V-Twin configuration helps it stand out in the 250 class. Formerly known as the Virago 250 (cooler name by the way…), the little V Star’s 249cc engine resides down in the itty-bitty end of the displacement pool of the Yamaha Star Motorcycles lineup.

While the 60-degree V-Twin won’t get mistaken for the big ol’ 1854cc mill powering its Star Raider sibling, it does deliver a more authentic cruiser look than most of its 250 rivals. A single 26mm Mikuni carb feeds fuel to the air-cooled V Star engine, and liberal use of the choke lever, located on the left hand controls, is a must on cold starts. Thumb the electric starter and the 250 manages city streets quite well, once it shakes off its wake-up call. Two-valve heads top cylinders with a 49mm bore by 66mm stroke, the compression ratio an even 10:1.

Dyno runs show a modest peak of 18 horsepower and 13.8 lb-ft of torque. So while the Star ain’t going to win many drag races (see sidebar), it does produce manageable, newbie-friendly power. V Star 250 Lightweight at 327lbs fully-fueled the V Star 250 is quite easy to ride, with a low, inviting 27-inch seat height. 2010 Star V Star 250 Review Acceleration is brisk enough to navigate helter-skelter city traffic, with smooth throttle and fueling ensuring the hamfisted newb won’t get frustrated with herky-jerky inputs. The Star’s little motor can rattle up to 55mph without trouble.

2010 Ducati Multistrada 1200S

Finally unveiled, world preview of the new and eagerly anticipated Multistrada 1200.

Also new for 2010: new “Corse” livery for the 1198, two new Hypermotard 1000evo models and technical advances in the Monster family.

As is tradition prior to the opening of the EICMA show, Ducati has officially revealed the innovations of its 2010 product range.
Dream bikes, the fruit of Italian ingenuity and creativity, and destined to become new points of reference on the international market, are ready to take the spotlight at EICMA 2009, the 67th edition of the International Motorcycle Exhibition, taking place at the Fiera Internazionale di Milano in Rho, from 10 - 15 November

Before the unveiling of the 2010 line-up, the new Ducati Corse logo was presented to the international press, an evolution of the historic brand in the form of a new graphic, following on from the launch of the new Ducati logo at last year’s EICMA show.

A press conference, eagerly anticipated and rich in content, took place immediately prior to the official opening of the trade show. Gabriele Del Torchio, President of Ducati Motor
Holding, met with representatives of the international media to present the company’s recent sporting and commercial results, confirming the Italian manufacturer’s strength and performance, despite the difficulties that the sector is currently experiencing.

2010 Suzuki SFV 650 Gladius

Destined to those who just approach riding, the new Gladius not only impresses through the way it looks, but with the help of a low seat (only 30.9 inches from the ground) and a fuel-injected, twin plug head engine, which is tuned for low-to-mid range torque.

Production costs were kept as low as possible and that implies a little bit of sacrifice on the weight chapter. For example, the trellis frame is made out of steel instead of aluminum. That brings a significant contribution to the 446 lbs wet weight that doesn’t do the Gladius that much good.

Honda CBX 250

Honda is coming up with 250cc motorcycle in India. As per sources Honda has already completed the R&D work and the bike is going to be launched after couple of months probably at the Diwali session. Currently the 250cc bike segment is being ruled by the only bike available- Kawasaki Ninja 250R which was launched recently and it seems like HMSI is not in a mood to miss the opportunity to give competition to this bike to be called as the only competitor of Kawasaki Ninja 250R on Indian roads.

As it is Kawasaki Ninja 250R is not in budget of many bike enthusiasts who are interested in 250cc category and Honda is going to tame that market by offering much cheaper 250cc bike as compared to Ninja, if sources are to be believed Honda is going to price the new bike under Rs.1.5 lacs, which is a very attractive figure for a 250cc milled bike, that too with world class quality & commitment of Honda.

Apart from expected price and expected time of launch it is not known whether the bike will be a naked- sportster version or a fairied version from Honda. Although what ever will be the form of the bike one thing is sure that it will be the performance bike from Honda’s stable and will definitely quench the thirst of performance biking lovers in all ways

Bajaj Pulsar 220 S

Finally Bajaj has launched its Pulsar 220 S the replica of Pulsar 200. The bike looks almost same as Pulsar 200, which was discontinued sometimes back, actually the heart of the bike is same as Pulsar 220 without fairing and the “S” refers to the “street” version of the Pulsar 220 series.

The bike is being criticized by many bike enthusiasts for its looks, which has nothing new to relish, on the other hand the pricing of the bike is kept very prudent by Bajaj, which will definitely attract many towards the new Pulsar 220S

Yamaha YZF 250- R4

Yamaha is going to surprise all of us by launching a 250cc bike on R1 platform at the upcoming Delhi Auto Expo if we believe the photograph. To our surprise the bike is called R4 with 250cc engine though ideally it should be R2 or R250 but in any case if it is true that Yamaha is ready to compete (and probably going to win) with Kawasaki in 250cc true sports class, then it really doesn’t matter by what name it is going to be launched, isn’t it?

However Yamaha India have not commented on this but we can expect some surprise as committed earlier by the company’s top officials. Coming to the bike it looks like it is a combination of R1 and R6 and I have a gut feeling that if this bike is ever launched in India it will certainly take lead over Kawasaki Ninja 250R, if priced prudently by Yamaha. What are your opinion guys?
